Mouse Ears Hat (edited but not "fixed")

**An Edit In Response To Many Replies:
10/10/2011 -- I made this hat intending it to fit a 2 year old child, but people are coming up with a much smaller size. While my version fit its victim snuggly, different hands create in different sizes. This pattern was posted for fun and for free, after I made it for one specific child with no other size adjustments. I'm not a professional designer and there's no refunds on freely shared ideas, all I can say is I wanted to share, sorry that it's not perfect. **

it's supposed to be able to fit a 2 yr old, but i don't have a 2 yr old on hand to see if it really does :) i usually don't care if nobody comments on my posts but it would be helpful to me if those who try this hat would tell me what size it actually is. anyways here's the pattern (crochet!!!)

Materials used:
1 or 2 oz of WW yarn (i used caron one pound)
Size I hook (i used US size aluminum)
scissors

Hat:
ch 2
1- make 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. join with sl st to top of first sc.
2- make 2 sc in each sc around. join with sl st to top of first sc. (16 sc around)
3- make (sc, 2sc in next) around. join with sl st to top of first sc. (24 sc around)
4- make (sc in each of next 2 sc, 2sc in next) around. join with sl st to top of first sc. (32 sc around)
5- make (sc in each of next 3 sc, 2sc in next) around. join with sl st to top of first sc. (40 sc around)
6- make (sc in each of next 4 sc, 2sc in next) around. join with sl st to top of first sc. (48 sc around)
7-19) make sc in each sc around. join with sl st to top of first sc. (48 sc around)
20- work one row of reverse sc.
Fasten off yarn, weave in ends.

Ears: (make 2)
5- make sc in each sc around. join with sl st to top of first sc. (32 sc around)
Fasten off yarn, leaving a long tail to sew ears to hat.
Enjoy!

It's a cute hat, unfortunately, it doesn't fit my 2 year old who has a small head.

I did make this and it was a little tight on my 3 yr old. I also doubled up on the ears (4 instead of 2 and sewed them tog the to the hat) to make the ears stand up more stable. I think a few more rnds of increasing might do the trick. I am gonna try it wtih 2 more rnds of increases to see if it fits better. Maybe we could work together and maybe make it to fit more sizes.

I have been learning to crochet on you tube tutorials and thought of this idea all on my own...guess I am not the first to think of it. Since I am new to crocheting I had no idea how to tackle the ears yet. Thanks for the pattern. No worries though, I do not sell any of my works, I am only making them for personal use. We are taking a trip to D-world next year and I wanted all my kids to have a beanie. They are going to love this. I am thinking of making a pink one with black ears sticking out for my daughter. I also have a new baby coming and thought I would make him a pair for his newborn pics. When I post my pics on FB, I will make sure to refer them to your pattern. Thanks again.

I have found this site helpful in determining how big to make my hats for my kids.

Thought I would share to help anyone out here with this pattern.

I just found this pattern. I have found using a larger hook will get a larger size or smaller hook to get smaller size on other hat patterns. I need to make one that fits a four year old with a large head. I think I will ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch 3 and 11 more dc in same ch. ch 3, dc in same then 2 dc in each around. Then use same stitching pattern for rest. I am going to use I or j hook. Debby

Thank you for the pattern! I am new to crocheting and have been trying to find and easy toddler pattern. I loved that yours was easy to follow. I did have to change the counts (but I think I pull too tight) bc my hat came out super small! But the easy directions made it easy for me to adjust so thank you!

What an adorable hat! I haven't made it yet and will post size to my project page on Rav, but as an experienced crocheter, I always take someone else's pattern as a guideline because I know my gauge and should know if the hat will or will not fit long before it is done. It's not the pattern's fault (or the designer's)if my gauge is different from theirs.
I will be using dk and a smaller hook as mine will be for a new baby.
Thank you for sharing and I am sorry your generous gesture was unappreciated.
